Precision Non-Imaging Optics

Precision non-imaging optics is applied for widespread applications. The most common application is in the field of LED lighting including spotlights and commercial lighting. Lighting applications often employ rotationally symmetric TIR (Total Internal Reflection) lenses or multifaceted reflectors, effectively utilizing LED efficiency to achieve specific light intensity output. Multifacted Surfaces and Microstructure Techniques - Reflectors

Multifacted surfaces serves as a core design element in many lighting applications. The most common application is multifacted reflectors, such as a MR-16 lamp. The broad definition of multifacted surfaces refers to optical designs constructed from multiple planes or microstructures that reflect light to be specific patterns. This technique is widely applied to the light guide plate design, multifacted reflector, and multifacted TIR lens.

LED Retrofit - Spotlight

This section introduces the classification of LED retrofit spotlights, including MR16, GU10, PAR lamps, and other TIR lens-based spotlights. It also provides information on the origins of MR and PAR lamps and explains the types of sockets.

LED Engineering Lighting – Secondary Lens

Infrared Recognition Applications - PIR Lenses

The original patent of PIR sensor module is invented by Herbert Berman in 1970. He used a segmented mirror made from metallized plastic with an infrared receiver to achieve the feature of detecting multiple zones. Then, around the 1980s, a novel compact optical lens approach was introduced to replace the reflective mirror, which used multiple Fresnel lenses combined into a single lens with an infrared receiver. This design soon became the popular PIR module, which is still followed today. There is still a dispute among manufactures who invented this Fresnel type of PIR module first, but credits may well belong to Augustine Fresnel (born 1788) [1].

LED Commercial Lighting

LED commercial lighting, distinct from retrofit lamp, often emphasizes shadow-free and high cut-off effect. Common examples include track lights, downlights, or projection lights with multifaceted reflectors.

LED Traffic Applications

Traffic applications covers a wide range of lighting needs, from personal use illumination for bicycles and automotive lamps to public facilities, such as traffic signals or directional signs. These applications involve safety considerations. They are often subject to specific regulations. Both safety and lighting requirements are important for people, which raises significant design and manufacturing challenges. LEDs used as light sources for traffic luminaires have limitations of directional lighting that is not omnidirectional. This characteristic of LED will make it be a high challenge to meet all traffic lighting regulations.
